Gerunds vs. Infinitives (동명사 vs to부정사) — 동사 뒤에 뭐가 올까?

영어에서 동사 뒤에 다른 동작을 이어 쓸 때, **동명사(-ing)**를 쓸지 **to부정사(to + 동사원형)**를 쓸지는 앞의 동사가 무엇이냐에 따라 정해집니다. 규칙이 아니라 “동사별 암기"에 가깝기 때문에 패턴으로 익혀두는 게 좋습니다.

⚠️ stop + -ing (~하는 것을 멈추다) vs stop + to부정사 (~하기 위해 멈추다)처럼 의미가 완전히 달라지는 동사들을 특히 주의하세요.

She enjoys reading mystery novels before bed. → (동명사만 가능: enjoy) “그녀는 자기 전에 추리 소설 읽는 것을 즐긴다.”
We decided to postpone the launch until August. → (to부정사만 가능: decide) “우리는 출시를 8월까지 연기하기로 결정했다.”
He stopped smoking two years ago. → (stop + -ing: ~하는 것을 그만두다) “그는 2년 전에 담배를 끊었다.”
On the way home, I stopped to buy some milk. → (stop + to부정사: ~하기 위해 멈추다) “집에 오는 길에 우유를 사려고 잠깐 멈췄다.”
I remember locking the door before we left. → (remember + -ing: 과거에 한 행동을 기억함) “우리가 나가기 전에 문을 잠갔던 게 기억나.”
