📖 오늘의 문법: Reported Speech (간접화법) — 남의 말을 전달하는 법

설명

직접화법(Direct Speech)은 상대방의 말을 따옴표로 그대로 옮기는 것이고, 간접화법(Reported Speech)은 그 말을 내 문장 안에 녹여서 전달하는 것입니다. 이때 몇 가지 규칙이 바뀝니다.

시제현재형한 단계 과거로 이동 (e.g. am → was, will → would)
대명사I, you문맥에 맞게 he/she 등으로 변경
시간/장소 표현today, herethat day, there 등으로 변경
연결어—that (생략 가능), if/whether (의문문)

⚠️ 전달동사가 said, told 등 과거형일 때만 시제를 뒤로 이동시킵니다. 일반적 사실(진리)은 시제를 바꾸지 않아도 됩니다. (e.g. “The sun rises in the east.”)

  1. Direct: “I’m tired,” she said. → Reported: She said (that) she was tired. → (현재 → 과거) “그녀는 피곤하다고 말했다.”

  2. Direct: “I will call you tomorrow,” he said. → Reported: He said he would call me the next day. → (will → would, tomorrow → the next day) “그는 다음 날 나에게 전화하겠다고 말했다.”

  3. Direct: “Where do you live?” she asked. → Reported: She asked where I lived. → (의문사 의문문 → 평서문 어순) “그녀는 내가 어디 사는지 물었다.”

  4. Direct: “Did you finish the report?” he asked. → Reported: He asked if I had finished the report. → (일반의문문 → if/whether + 과거완료) “그는 내가 보고서를 끝냈는지 물었다.”

  5. Direct: “Close the door, please,” she said. → Reported: She asked me to close the door. → (명령문 → to부정사) “그녀는 나에게 문을 닫아달라고 부탁했다.”
