📖 오늘의 문법: Nominalization (명사화)
Nominalization은 동사나 형용사를 명사형으로 바꿔서 문장을 더 격식 있고 간결하게 만드는 기법입니다. 비즈니스 이메일, 보고서, 학술적인 글에서 특히 자주 쓰입니다. 캐주얼한 대화에서는 동사를 그대로 쓰는 게 자연스럽지만, 격식 있는 문서에서는 명사화된 표현이 훨씬 전문적으로 들립니다.
- decide → decision: We made a decision to postpone the launch.
- analyze → analysis: They conducted a thorough analysis of the data.
- improve → improvement: We need an improvement in customer satisfaction.
- assess → assessment: The manager carried out an assessment of the risks.
- invest → investment: The company will make a greater investment next year.
주로 -tion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ance/-ence 같은 접미사가 붙으며, “make a decision”, “conduct an analysis”, “carry out an assessment"처럼 동사(make/conduct/carry out) + 명사화된 단어 조합으로 많이 쓰입니다.
💡 Tip: 이메일이나 보고서를 더 프로페셔널하게 쓰고 싶다면, 동사를 그대로 쓰기보다 “make a decision”, “give consideration to”, “have an impact on"처럼 명사화 표현으로 바꿔보세요.
